Types of Penile Implant
Penile implant is a device designed to provide an erect penis to those men who are nor able to experience a natural erection. This treatment is usefully performed only after less invasive methods have failed. Penile implants are specifically used in men whose erectile difficulties are due to physical problems like blood vessel disease, diabetes, nerve damage caused by injury, or as a complication from pelvic surgery. If you have erectile dysfunction problem due to psychological problems, implants are not used as a treatment.
There are three styles of penile implants available which include the semirigid malleable implant, the multipart inflatable implant, and the self-contained inflatable implant.
Semirigid malleable implant: This is a flexible rod-shaped silicone prosthetic. The device is surgically implanted into the penis which generally bent down against the body and then straightened for making love. It is simple and does not cost too much, but it does not enhance the length or width of the penis, although it provides the feeling of a permanent erection.
Multipart inflatable implant: This device involves two hollow cylinders that are surgically inserted into the penis. During the procedure, a pump is surgically inserted in the scrotum and a reservoir either inside the cylinders or as a separate part into the lower abdomen. To make the penis get erect, pump is squeezed which transfers the fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders. The special thing about this penile implant device is that it is controlled by the owner. It gives the impression of a natural looking erection and enables the penis to return to a flaccid state and have no concealment problems. One main disadvantage of this device is its high cost and the chances of mechanical failure.
Self contained inflatable implant: This implant device consists of two parallel cylinders surgically inserted into the penis. To achieve an erection, one squeezes the ends of the cylinders, firming the penis in a natural appearing erection under the control of the user. This device creates the most authentic looking erection with no concealment problems but does not lengthen or widen the penis. However, it is easier to insert than the multipart inflatable implant, and it does not need any implants in the scrotum or abdomen. To implant this device, the surgical procedure is more involved, plus due to more complex function of the multipart inflatable implant, the cost for the surgical procedure is higher.
In addition, none of three either interferes with or guarantees ejaculation or orgasm; none have an effect upon libido.
